Why do Atheists get married in a church?

  • Just wondering why some Atheists would get married in a church by a religious minister.

  • They don't. But in some countries it is not legal to get married any where but a church or a registration office

  • The whole ceremony thing is for the woman anyway. If that is how she wants it, then why not? I don't need blessings from some invisible sky daddy and his earthly lackeys to validate my relationship.

  • Not me, I'm getting married on a beach in Jamaica.

  • I don't plan on getting married in a church, or by a religious minister. Why do you assume all atheists do this?

  • It's pretty.

    And to make relatives happy.

  • I would do it just for the preservation of the cultural end of the ceremony.

  • probably irony

  • I don't know..
*This* atheist would flat out refuse to go through with it, that's for sure.

Anyway, I guess some of them do it because they want to stay in the closet. Others do it in order to get their families to shut up. Some do it because of tradition. And yet others do it because their partner is a Christian. Those are my guesses, at least.

  • Because it's the brides big day, sometimes they want extravagance. They want an all out wedding with all the trimmings.

  • Cause they are whipped by their fornicating partners.

  • Not this Atheist. Conditioning perhaps.

  • It makes the family happy; and many do NOT marry in a church. Many marry in a park, botanical garden, or anywhere else they see fit. As to the reason for a minister, they do have to have someone empowered to PERFORM a ceremony, and that usually means a member of the clergy. Stupid law, really, but true nevertheless.

  • I didn't however many of my friends did. They liked the ambiance.

  • Why do some Christians, etc. get married only in a civil ceremony?

    _()_

  • I was married in a mosque, because my husband is Muslim. I've never been married in a church.

  • I wonder that too myself. If I get married it won't be in a church and certainly not by a religious minister. That's unfair to me.

    Also, it's "atheists" not "Atheists".

  • I've never heard of or known an atheist being married in a church.

  • It's the convention. Personally I didn't.

  • They musn't be proper Atheists then! I won't be stepping foot inside a church when I get married nor will I be having a religious ceremony! I feel very strongly about this too, so won't be getting swayed by any family members or friends.

  • Family B-S.

  • Tradition

  • Very few do, unless their spouses are religious. At least 1/3 of all marriages in this country (and region) are civil ceremonies performed by Justices of the Peace.

  • Aside from the fact that none of the people I know did, what is with the "why do atheists do this" and "why does group Y do that" questions?

The better question is, unless it is personally hurting you in some way, why would you care?

  • marriage is an oath, vow, or promise between man and woman before God. Why do they even get married?

  • If the couple are both atheists I doubt that they would get married in a church.

  • My wife wanted to do it out of tradition and pleasing the elderly in both sides of the family. I did it for her, it made her happy.

  • I don't know. I was married in a casino.

  • If they are marrying a religious person than why wouldn't they?

I've never known two atheists who got married in a church. Ever. So I couldn't say.

  • You get nice wedding photos.

  • Because they like the whole traditional idea behind it. A traditional wedding takes place in a church.

  • Because they inwardly believe that a church wedding is the RIGHT thing to do.

I believe it also shows that they really want to believe God.
