What makes an atheist a "militant atheist"? and would you consider richard dawkins a militant atheist?

  • if you say militant christian, i think of abortion clinic bombing.
if you say militant islam, i think we all think of 9/11.
but to be a militant atheist, do you only need to write a book?

  • What make a militant christian or a militant jew or a militant Muslim

  • I don't consider Richard Dawkins a militant atheist
What makes militant atheists seems to be challenging some christians and saying not everyone agrees with them

  • Using your definition of "militant", then no. Many people, however, do not restrict it to people who go as far as terrorist activity, instead including those who passionately and aggressively endorse and defend their cause, even if without loss of life, or even physical violence. Martin Luther, Susan B. Anthony, even Mahatmas Gandhi, all people of tremendous passion and commitment, are widely considered to have been militant in their activism, but they all did considerably more than write a book.

  • What makes for a militant atheist? Being tired of being told one is without morals, or evil, or doomed to hell. that one doesn't deserve to be a citizen of a nation, or even to live, because you don't share the popular delusions of the time. All the while being told that you "must respect" the religious views of people who will not provireciprocalcal respect. I'm willing to live and let live, but when someone cops these attitudes with me, I feel no obligation to "turn the other cheek". And I consider Richard Dawkins a militant atheist. And yes, all you have to do is write a book, and not be apologetic for saying someone else's beliefs are silly. Which seems to make militant atheism the preferable form of extremism....

  • A cock-tail of three things at least: miopy (short sightness), pride (in themselves, their profession, their ego) and ignorance (on a particular subject: scriptures). I said "at least". I have seen some more. Hawkins' case is paticularly special.

  • Apparently, all you need do to be labeled 'militant atheist' is voice an opinion that does not agree with religion.

I have not read Dawkins, nor am I an atheist.

  • LOL!

Nah, Dawkins isn't a militant atheist...now if he went to a church and started preaching against christianity (or any holy place against that religion) then yes..

Or, like Desiree - come to Y!A and telling people to "go **** themselves" and calling them a "moron" in the same email - didn't even see her today until I got that Email...simply because I can - and do - disprove the lies she says...

    Well...you get the pic.

A lot of my friends on here are atheists - I would NEVER put them in the same boat as Desiree...

I also think of Marxism and communism without religion...

    those are militant atheists...

  • At the moment there is no sign of militant atheists but they cannot be far away!

The way BAD Christians have become so intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted!! Eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more. Christians are the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting gays, pro choice and so much more - but far worse whilst they demand freedom of religion they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them!!!

They violate any answer they do not like and the tone of their posts drive people away from hearing god's word.

Their actions are turning non Christians from simply not believing in their god to opposing the terrible human emotions and opinions of these people and making more and more people feel that for the sake of humanity they have to be anti christian to put a stop to it!!

If only they would rediscover the god of love and forgiveness they used to have!!

  • "militant atheist" refers to the super intelligence that can create intelligent, post-religous Realism to positively influence society to rid it of sociopaths.

    Dawkins is VERY smart

  • No, Dawkins is just strident.

    "Militant atheist" is an oxymoron.

  • Militancy is an adamant refusal to concede the implausible. Example: The incessant demand for evidence. Persons having open minds and broad hearts, and with vision and eyes to see, perceive a wondrous beauty and spirituality in ordinate things. As a person in love with his world.

The militant atheist retorts ⠘Where⠙s your proof?⠙⠙ I will say a rise in pure chemicals emitted from the brain causing clarity in thinking, a calming of the senses and a euphoric state of mind⠙⠙. What causes this change in perception vision, a change of physical chemistry, what causes this change⠙⠙ there is so much to be investigated, researched. How foolish is it to dismiss out of hand an enduring reality.

The militant remains unmoved. What evidence does he seek but a validation of his own existence, purpose, function. He is of Gods spirit but unable to connect with his own soul. Anger, hatred, hurt, resentment have erected barriers, a prison within his own mind and thinking. That is mans journey. To overcome obstacles impeding his path to his own soul and God*.

It is further explained God is a supernal Omnipresent Force, Energy, Will. Evidence!. Scientists are required to hold a hypothesis, to belive and have knowledge of the nature of what constitutes God* to research and validate should they harbour a desire to do so.

You cannot seek upon a map, a place you know not the name or existence of. Similarly you cannot prove or substantiate the existence of an Entity you have no understanding of. You are required to know fundamental constituents of what is considered perfect, utopian to create or charter a path to its door.

There is a term for it escapes me at this moment in time.

  • A militant atheist is an atheist with guns who goes out and kills non-atheists because of their beliefs.

There are no militant atheists. I'm guessing there are almost zero who would want to kill for their beliefs, and the few that do wouldn't ever start a war over it, because atheists don't believe in an afterlife. Death means the end, so war is very, very bad.

  • Militant implies force.
I don't think so, he is just a prominent atheist

  • Dawkins has referred to himself as a militant atheist, but I'm pretty sure that was tongue-in-cheek.

  • The reason so many people like atheism is because it lacks an organized militant wing, unlike the Salvation Army.
I have been called militant because I do not back down from a point, When some one presents their side of an argument I attack it and prove it to be false without hesitation. However in the West debate is discouraged because people like to be told what to think. If there are two opposing ideas we as a population can not understand them. So we have Fox News and we have PBS neither of which presents a whole argument but work on the extremes of both ends. Any individual who dares encourage healthy intellectual discourse is then considered a Militant by popular standards.

  • A Militant anything uses violence to achieve their aims.
So a Militant Atheist sounds like someone who'd use violence to force atheism on others?

  • There aren't any militant atheists in reality - well not from the logical, rational ones. Its just a term used by fundies to have a go at us for speaking out against their beliefs - they use names, we all know that.

  • Apparently it is being outspoken about religion and its involvement in the political scene.
