whaling is absolutely barbaric...just as seal culling and any other form of animal killing... id like to do to the people what they do to the poor helpless animals!! animals cant speak therefore someone needs to speak for them.....IT MUST BE STOPPEDI am against whaling, but i don't think that it is any worse than any other method of killing an animal. fisheries catch net loads of fish the ones at the bottom are crushed to death and the ones that survive on deck die from suffocation.
I can't help but feel that most of the opposition to whaling is because people have watched flipper and free willy one to many times. if people are willing to harvest cows and sheep then i don't see why cetaceans shouldn't be harvested sustainably in the same way.
I think that the whole whaling issue is extremely hypocritical.
there is more long term damage to whale and dolphin populations caused by "eco-tourism" than by whaling. the indirect damage caused by boat traffic and dolphin watching tours can cause long term reproductive problems in the populations they watch.
Whaling has been a very controversial issue especially for countries who do it for a living and it's actually a thriving industry. Countries like Norway, The Netherlands, Japan and Iceland to name a few engage in this industry that has threatened the dwindling whale population. The real issue is stopping this cruel industry and finding a sustainable alternative source of livelihood for whaling companies and it's employees. The Blubber (fat) of whales are used to manufacture personal care products like lotions or perfume and cosmetics and the like. It also serves as a delicacy for the Innuits of Greenland while the bone may be used to make dominos, for instance. Both bone and meat are used as Meat and Bone Meal a.k.a cat food and dog food. Until now, since there are no "real" feasible solutions to the issue, a lot of these countries still continue whaling despite the heated protests of animal rights activists and to the detriment of the endangered whale population.it's unbelievable that in this day and age, there is still whaling.
The most guilty are the "Native" Americans, or eskimoes who are always trying to play the system and kill as many animals as they can rather than live like civilized humans. These savages live in alaska and parts of canada and greenland.
Also guilty are the Japs and Norwegians who just want to protect a special interest group and a few jobs.
It's repulsive and these practices need to stop.
