What do you have to do in order to qualify for fertility meds?
I just went to the Dr. yesterday. My husband and I have been TTC for about 5 months...and due to an irregular cycle have had no success. My Dr. is putting me on Clomid to help with ovulation. I think it really depends on your Dr. as far as when you can be put on meds. See if your insurrance covers fertility meds, your doctor will ask you if you have been trying to concieve for over year and run tests on you I am sure. Or you can do it the easy way which is buying them off the internet, but if you do that than there is no one to monitor you while you are taking them to make sure everything is okay. Your choice. In certain cases, some of my friends had ob/gyns who had them start trying "lower level" fertility treatment options (e.g. Clomid) without testing to "just see" if they worked. If you have certain physical signs they may test you earlier. For example, with PCOS it isn't uncommon to have irregular or absent periods, facial hair, weight issues, or acne. They might signal an earlier evaluation.
It might also matter what state you are in. Only 12 or so states require insurance companies to cover infertility treatments. For those, insurance policies may require the 12 month + of trying before they will cover your care or a documented fertility problem (e.g. endometriosis). Other states do not mandate coverage and so you're left on your own to pay for any medications, surgeries, IVF, etc. Resolve.org lists different policies by state.
Good luck,
Mindy
STRESS to your doctor that you have been trying for OVER a YEAR.
Go prepared with questions.
Straight up just ask for it and see what they recommend. You will have to take some blood work tests, maybe an ultrasound. But, if you tell the doctor you have been trying for a year/over a year they should at least start the tests. (if not, FIND A NEW DR!)
Good Luck :D
