What do you have to do in order to qualify for fertility meds?

I just went to the Dr. yesterday. My husband and I have been TTC for about 5 months...and due to an irregular cycle have had no success. My Dr. is putting me on Clomid to help with ovulation. I think it really depends on your Dr. as far as when you can be put on meds. See if your insurrance covers fertility meds, your doctor will ask you if you have been trying to concieve for over year and run tests on you I am sure. Or you can do it the easy way which is buying them off the internet, but if you do that than there is no one to monitor you while you are taking them to make sure everything is okay. Your choice.
  • It depends on your doctor. Technically, infertility is defined as TTC for 12 months w/o success in women of childbearing age. Often clinicians will wait until after that period for testing/treatment if there are no other signs of certain things that might impair fertility. However, in women over 35, they may start testing as soon as six months of trying.

In certain cases, some of my friends had ob/gyns who had them start trying "lower level" fertility treatment options (e.g. Clomid) without testing to "just see" if they worked. If you have certain physical signs they may test you earlier. For example, with PCOS it isn't uncommon to have irregular or absent periods, facial hair, weight issues, or acne. They might signal an earlier evaluation.

It might also matter what state you are in. Only 12 or so states require insurance companies to cover infertility treatments. For those, insurance policies may require the 12 month + of trying before they will cover your care or a documented fertility problem (e.g. endometriosis). Other states do not mandate coverage and so you're left on your own to pay for any medications, surgeries, IVF, etc. Resolve.org lists different policies by state.

    Good luck,

  • You need to have a good doctor one that actually listen to you. If not, don't hesitate, go to another..there are plenty out there.
STRESS to your doctor that you have been trying for OVER a YEAR.
    Go prepared with questions.
Straight up just ask for it and see what they recommend. You will have to take some blood work tests, maybe an ultrasound. But, if you tell the doctor you have been trying for a year/over a year they should at least start the tests. (if not, FIND A NEW DR!)
    Good Luck :D
  • You have to be tested for fertility problems. And the tests have to determine that you have a specific problem that will actually be HELPED by fertility meds. (Usually absent or very infreuqent ovulation.)

  • I recently went to the doctors as I have been TTC for over a year but I have PCOS. The doctor said that if we were a healthy young couple they expect you to try for 2 years before they take the next step (Meds etc).
  • You need to have a full evaluation from the doctor...they need to find that you are completely healthy...this you should ask to the place you're thinking to buy the meds...
  • doctors will not prescribe anything until you have actively been trying with no success for a year. they will also run tests to make sure nothing is wrong.
  • Have fertility problems?
  • Have a womb like barren wasteland
