SVCDs have blocky, ugly colored picture (Pic inside)

  • Hi!

Iīve updated xbmc to the latest T3CH (15-05 / 8943) and tried to play a few SVCDs. They have all picture errors and the sound is distorted. Hereīs a picture example:
    http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7320/screenshotxbmcsvcdow5.th.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotxbmcsvcdow5.jpg)

It was a fresh install in a new folder. Hereīs the debug-log:

Some users on the german evo-x.de-forums have the same picture and sound errors.
    ----------------
    PAL Xbox 1.0
    SmartXX V2 Chip with X2 4983 or 79 (?) modified BIOS
    XBMC as Dash with T3CH-shortcut
    Philips SD-M32 DVD-ROM
    60GB HD not lockable
    ----------------
If itīs a "real bug" and you want me to post a bug-report on SF then iīll do

thx in advance for fixing it

  • Just tried more builds: (tested from newer builds backwards)
    svn 8306: didnīt work
svn 8233: canīt test because of 404 error on T3CHīs site
svn 8103: Canīt play file from the CD. Autostart and from the filmanager didnīt work. From HD the file didnīt work, too
svn: 7937: This is very strange. The mpg-file works from CD, but not from HD

  • Hi,

  • very nice samples, they show the issue quite nicely. there is repetetive pattern of bytes in the broken file. something definatly goes wrong.

  • Remember the xbox dvd drives are junk.. they are picky about media as well as formatting. Can you try other medias and see if its universal?

  • ... here u are. (took some time finding an suitable tool on linux)

  • I have the same problem, tried several svcds and they all look ugly and blocky - hope you can fix that soon - keep up the good work! A big THX to all the guys who spend their free time with enhancing this great piece of software!!!

  • Well, weīll see.
    Thanks anyway. :)

  • HI,

    some more information:

As I said, I copied the .mpg to xbox hdd. I did that with an "non-working" copy of xbmc. After that the file was damaged, also if I played it with my "working" copy or even on PC. (same errors!)
On the other hand I copied the same .mpg from same disc, with the working copy, the file on hdd was ok on both builds. So for me it seems to be a disc-reading problem?
Iīll now cut off a slice and post it.

  • Tried with the same SVCD:
    2.01 final: worked
    svn 7667: worked
    svn 8014: worked
    iīll test more builds tomorrow

  • so did this used to work? if you could try same sample with an older build and make sure it works it would be nice.

  • right.. hmm. have any of you guys tried playing the file locally or is it just from disc?

  • Hi,
    same error here.
I tried several builds from april and may, playing svcds (and vcds) does not work.

I also tried a really old build, from jan 2007 (old xbmclinks build), NO problems there. Same disc of course.

  • I have no idea where te bug is in our somewhat convoluted iso9660 support so i'm rewriting the iso9660 support to use libcdio, can't say how long it will take thou.

  • Okey, that is very interesting. Could you get me a slice of both the copy that works and the one that is broken. It does indeed sound like a file reading issue.

  • .. yes, I did, copied the mpeg to box hdd. But it didnīt work either.

  • Hi,

i just did a test and can comfirm it works fine now.
Thanks for this quick solution, great work.

  • ok.. i want into a wall on the cdio rewrite. found the issue in our old code thou, so it should be fine now.

  • Hi!
little bit OT: (maybe a sideeffect of this bug)
I wanted to try copying mpg-files by myself to test the reading error. The older XBMC-versions worked fine, but in the newest T3CH 8943 i canīt access my CDs in the filemanager. It shows the Drive as empty. With "My Videos" and the Start-Button the CDs worked fine. Did some further testing:
SVCD - not working (shows as empty)
    Xbox-Game - yes
CD with avi - not working
CD with mp3s - not working
    DVD-video - yes
Maybe itīs because of the iso filesystem on the CDs? I have no advancedsettings.xml

  • Remember the xbox dvd drives are junk.. they are picky about media as well as formatting. Can you try other medias and see if its universal?
The older XBMC-versions worked fine, but in the newest T3CH 8943 i canīt access my CDs in the filemanager.
The disks where all the time in the drive, i just switched the XBMC-Version via the file manager. The disks played fine from the menu or via the start-button but NOT in the filemanager. it shows "empty" (only in the newest T3CH).

  • if somebody could chop of a sample of a svcd somewhere and upload for me i'd be much obliged.
