ScreenSaver SlideShow Not Working

i played around with the screensaver feature in xbmc and ran into the 'slideshow' possibility.
so i selected that one, set the timeout to 1 minute, entered a valid jpeg pics directory and waited.
after 1 minute the screen blanked (became all black) and nothing happened.
the first time i tried was some t3ch builds ago from jan '06.
yesterday i again tried with the 6 feb t3ch build. still the same result: all black.

did you select the dir with the dialog or enterd with gamepad/keyboard?
what i did was what solo0815 indicated to me: i selected slideshow as screensaver.
then, in the same window, the bottom selection becomes activated and i could click on that to enter the screensaver_slideshow_directory.
that popped up a window i never saw before: in there i could browse the hd and select a slideshow directory.
after that it worked fine.

i know it can be changed in settings -> appearance.
and one could edit e:\tdata\settings.xml by hand.
are there more ways then ?
what i am thinking of is whether i succeeded in entering a wrong path. that would be an obvious error. i checked that of course and asking me then that looks fine.
i also do not see any debug message in the xbmc.log that gives a hint on what could be wrong.
