We have new neighbors who moved in next door (we rent an older townhome, middle unit). Our neighbors smoke a lot in their home, and the smell of cigarettes has been coming in from the closet under the basement stairs (on the shared wall). I dont know how its happening, there is poured concrete, but the smell is terrible. Now, the past few days, there is the smell of pot coming in through the same place. Our 10 year old sons room is in the basement. Ive called the landlord, she had her handyman come put some insulation under the stairs (which did nothing obviously). The smell is permeating our whole house. What should I do??? We have to live out the rest of our lease until the end of April. There is no law in Illinois that states the landlord has to do anything about the smell of cigarettes. Therefore, we cannot get out of our lease even if the smell is terrible. What can we do??odors can not go through cement, there must be other passage, search for draft or noise anywhere betweence the two apartments, check flooring at ends, and any pipes or electrical mounts, may be best to place child upstairs as well, or far from wall, wash down the walls, clean rugs and floors, add or ventilate area or building as a whole, increase back pressure so your space forces air out any cracks or leaks, meaning to say have fresh air from outdoors vented into your home, note that some buildings have washer/dryers in basements, and while on could be pulling air in through unwanted leaks make separate air intake somewhere near dryer, same with fireplaces if any,
..Find yourself a friend in the police dept that might stop by on occation, not to bust them but to make a presance that might be enough to stop the pot smell but the cigs well that's a tough one, funny they have right's to even though we hate those right's, I would check your renters rights online and see if there is anything that can be done,
