PM3: Choppy scrolling in icon view when browse up

  • This "problem" has been going on for a while.

I have the latest SVN build & PMIII. When I'm scrolling through video files in icon view, the scrolling is very smooth when navigating forward (down), but when I go back up, the scrolling is choppy in comparison. Not a huge problem, obviously, but posting it in case it would be an easy fix.

  • yeah i have noticed this too, i have a v.1 xbox upstairs and a v1.6 downstairs with the exact same database but the v1.6 seems to scrool better and with less hard drive noise!!!

  • It'd still have to then load the next row on scroll - there is no way to avoid it.

  • The only time ive noticed this is when i have adjusted the in advancedsettings... but you have to sacrifice performance for detail.

  • SandManCL: It may be because the thumbs are only slightly onscreen in the last row (you may not be able to see them, but they may be on screen enough to be allocated).

Thus scrolling down doesn't need to load the next images until the scroll down is just about finished.

Scrolling up requires loading the next image at the start of the scroll, which may be why you notice a glitch.

Just a hypothesis - I have no idea whether or not this is the reason: There is certainly no difference code-wise to the way images are loaded.

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

  • is there a way for skinners to make their skin force pre-caching of the next row of thumbnails? ???
...if it doesn't take up too much memory then it could be nice to cache the row above and bellow?

  • @jmarshall: if this is a consequence of thumb load time, why would it differ when navigating in one direction but not the other ? Does xbmc cache the next four icons but not the previous ?

  • I noticed this stutter too both up and down, perticlually browsing IMDb movie thumbnails, and I believe this issue was introduced with the 'new' scrollbar (right side scroller bar) in the PM3 skin(?)

  • It's purely a consequence of the time taken to load the thumbs.

As you get more and more on the drive, the performance of the filesystem goes to crap.

Running from a debug environment will show you this.

  • yeah i have noticed this too, i have a v.1 xbox upstairs and a v1.6 downstairs with the exact same database but the v1.6 seems to scrool better and with less hard drive noise!!!Version of Xbox makes no difference what so ever (that is a technically impossibility), there must be a other reason for you seeing a difference. I bet that if you would switch the harddrives 'as is' between your two Xboxes then the issue will move with the harddrive and not stay with the rest of the Xbox.
