limit text form field entry to width of table cell?

  • It's late, and I've gone brain-dead.

I'm converting some Word documents to be used as forms for my husband, and came across a small-ish problem when trying to limit the # of characters.

The problem lies with the fact that different letters have different widths. So, if I fill one box all the way across with the letter 'n' over and over again, I get 69 characters before the box starts to re-size itself.

If I fill it all the way with the letter 'm' though, it only goes to about 46 characters.

I know that the cells themselves have an option for "fit text," but it doesn't work for the form fields...any thoughts?

And, for the record, I can't use macros on these. (I don't think I've ever done macros in Word before anyway, so that would be one heck of a trip...)

    Thanks!

  • You can set row or cell height/width to prevent cells from expanding in Table/Table Properties.

If you want each letter to take up the same amount of space, you might try a monospaced font like Courier.

Forms have to be protected before fields work right (go to Tools/Protect Document).

  • Yeah, the form's been protected during all of my tests. I know how it works.

Well, originally I had forgotten to uncheck the box under table properties allowing it to change the size to fit the contents. I did that part right after I posted the message (like I said, it was late and I was brain-dead at the time ;) )

However, the problem still lies in that I can't get the text to stay in the cell. If I do the "m" thing again, it doesn't resize the table, but it just "runs off" the edge.

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to change the font, since these are forms they have made by other companies (some of which are very touchy about these things), but I'll ask anyway. I'm thinking that may be the only way around it short of just coming up with a 'uniform' character limit.

    Gah.

How I wish I could do this in Excel right now. :hrmph:
