Learning guitar, what is next?

  • I started playing guitar like 6 months ago. I have learned and practiced some open and barre chords on my acoustic guitar, and can now easily move between them, while making decent sound. It still buzzes once in a while, but not often. (For my own reference: Opens: E, Emin, A, Amin, C, D, Dmin, G. Barre chords: E shape, all the way down to C- I can't go further down. I'm practicing my A shaped barres, and can play Amin barre chords all the way down)

What is next? I am starting to get bored!

The problem is I have not practiced any song, (well, apart from hotel california), and all I can do with my right hand is strum with a pick.

  • Two thoughts for finger picking fun

    1. Start experimenting with the chords you already know. Play individual notes of the chords in different combinations, and you will find they sounds very nice with each other. Play around with only plucking combinations of two, three, or one string at a time, and strumming in different ways. You will find even within the chords you've already learned there's a lot of room for variation and experimentation.

    2. Now that you're getting down chords it might be time to pick up learning scales. An Emin pentatonic scale (a web search will pull up a fingering chart for you), for instance, would sound nice with the chords you've already learned. First its good to just learn to play up and down the scale, practicing your finger positions like you have with the chords. But once you have that down you can start experimenting and playing combos of notes in that scale and you will find they also sound very good together. You might even be able to try out some of the lead/accompanying parts of Hotel California, if you're not sick of it yet :-)

  • well then, find yourself some new songs! with that large repertoire of chords at your disposal you are sure to be able to play quite a bit. Just a suggestion tho, for a much larger selection of songs you can get, practice your F-chord. Hope that helps.
