If a patients has scheduled times for a breathing treatment, but wants one inbetween, what is the protical?

  • I don't know, but I suspect you'd better learn to spell "protocol" if you want to pass your exam.

Oh - and please don't go to work in a hospital near ME.

  • Your doc will have to refer you. Just call his office and tell the nurse you feel like you need one, and ask if the doc will give you a script or referral. Why don't you ask your doc for a home nebulizer? Some insurances, and medicare will sometimes pay for it.

  • The word is "protocol." And "in between."

Edit: I agree with Chicken Little - don't work near ME, either.

  • You would have to ask your MD. It depends on what type of treatment your taking. A breathing treatment can cause the heart rate to increase so you don't want to take them too close together.

  • It is not a matter of want one but a matter of need one that is important. Some people are psychologically dependant on neb treatments. Neb treatments are for the most part intended to relieve wheezing. Some people are short of breath from anxiety, therefore a neb treatment will not do them any good but could possibly excite them even more. You also have to pay attention to "wheezing actors"!! Some people want a neb treatment so bad that they will "fake" wheeze. If you place a stethoscope to their lungs and do not hear wheezing, place the stethoscope on the neck area to see if that is where the wheezing is coming from. If the wheezing is coming from the neck then you know that the patient is "fake" wheezing. The way to get a treatment for a patient who NEEDS one in between treatments, is to talk to the Dr. about having PRN for wheezing added into the order. This means an individual can take a neb treatment in between scheduled treatments for wheezing ONLY.
