I am 14 and i want to learn to play the piano?!?!?

  • i want to learn the to play the piano?!?! is it too late? if it's not how do i start... where do i find a teacher?

  • True, it's not too late. The most important thing will be the quality and quantity of practice time going forward.

To find a good teacher cheaply, go to the music department of a nearby college or university. See if there are upper-level piano majors who are willing to teach you. They're up on the latest ideas in music education, and they'll often work cheaper. If no student is available, ask the music department for references--they know who the best teachers in town are (unlike the Yellow Pages).

You'll probably want a practice instrument. Cheapest and least space-consuming would be an electronic keyboard; those also have the capacity to change tones, which can help reduce the boredom factor when you're going through all your major and minor scales and arpeggios. Look for a keyboard that has (a) full-sized keys, preferably a full 88-key layout (b) touch-sensitive keys (c) weighted keys. Those are the ones that will feel like a real piano, and that's important; if you start out practicing on a cheaper 3/4 size 48-key spring-loaded on-off instrument, you'll probably never develop the 'touch' necessary to play an acoustic piano well; if you do develop the 'touch' on a proper instrument, then you can switch to the cheap toys with no trouble whatsoever.

One more tip: as a beginner, try to practice a half-dozen times daily for no more than 10 minutes at a time. Even sitting down to just go through one scale for 30 seconds counts. Many short practices give the beginner much faster progress. Then, every week, extend your maximum time by a couple of minutes--eventually reduce the number of practices--and in a few months you've built stamina correctly, with reduced risk of tendinitis or other repetitive motion injury, and then you will know enough to benefit from a single daily practice of 1-3 hours.
