How much should one pay to replace a hydrolic clutch?

  • I have a 1998 Mazda pickup truck, similar to a Ford Ranger.

  • Parts and labor usually run around $500 to $700 for a clutch job.

  • GQ,
I've had quite a few clutches replaced. It depends more on where you take it than anything else. I find they normally run between 400 and 600. Hint - stay the heck away from the dealerships. They will take you for a ride and I don't mean a good one. Right now hourly labor rates are about $90/hour for dealerships (at least in Texas). You can usually find a competent mechanic for 70 if you just ask around.

Also - make sure they replace the "throwout" bearing while they are in there doing the clutch. It's cheap, they are already in there where it is, so it shouldn't be more labor (if it is, they are ripping you off), and they eventually go bad on their own and the last thing you want to do is pay several hundred bucks to someone to take apart a clutch that still has life in it in order to change a bearing that went bad.
