Why is it that some US flags are painted "horizontally inversed" on US
army uniforms? I've also seen the same thing painted on planes.Hi Simondamien,
What a good question! As a child of a Navy pilot, I grew up knowing
this answer, and no one has ever asked! DIsplaying a US flag backwards
it to make the flag appear to be blowing in the wind!
"Why is the flag sometimes backwards on the side of airplanes, buses,
and other vehicles?
The flag decals have the union (the blue area with the stars) on
the side closer to the front of the plane. On the plane's left, the
decal shows the flag with the union at the left, as usual. On the
plane's right side, the union is on the right. This is done so that
the flag looks as if it is blowing in the wind created by the forward
movement. You can see this on cars and trucks as well. "

To wear our country's flag properly, the field of stars should be worn
closest to your heart. Thus, if your patch is to be worn on your LEFT
sleeve, use a left flag. For patches worn on your RIGHT sleeve, use a

principle. The flag always 'flies forward'. i.e, the canton (stars) on
the flag is oriented towards the front of the moving object as though
it were being carried on a staff and moving in a forward direction.
The custom is to display the American flags on the both sides of a
plane, usually on the vertical stabilizer in the back of the aircraft.
If you happen to be looking at the left side of the aircraft (the left
side from the passenger's point of view) the stars will be on the left
(or normal position);
If you walk around to the right side of the aircraft, the canton will
be on your right!"
