Fonts seem to be out of whack!

  • I recently had my harddrive replaced. Now the fonts are not right. I normally choose Times New Roman. At #10 size it appears normal, but 11 and up are dark and look almost like bold. When you do make a word bold, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. I never had this prob before. I have looked at fonts in Control Panel, but can't figure out how to correct this. It's in Word, Wordpad, Notepad, etc. Any suggestions?

  • the only thing I can really think of is that you don't have your system back to the settings you had before..

sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  • Yes. I typed a sentence in Word with 10 font, made some of the words 11, held the shift key and pressed the prt scrn key and tried to paste it in a new doc. For some reason it does not copy. Wonder why? I never knew what that key was for.

  • To me, it looked like "the" and "lives" were bold..
hmm - can you send me the document?

  • sorry - it's not your fault that attachments aren't working. The owner is trying to get us to a new server - the old one is being stubborn about attachments.
If you wish, you can send it to me at: tracy AT theofficeexperts.com (AT is actually the @ symbol... just trying to protect myself)
I can share the attachment with anyone else interested.

  • Do not press the Shift key. Just press Print Screen, then switch to your new doc and press Ctrl + V to paste.

  • it could be something special w/your video card... do you know what type you have?

as for having to resize everything - when you hard drive was installed, everything defaulted back to normal. Best Buy may or may not have upped your resolution - if they did, they didn't bother resizing your windows....
    what else isn't "right?"

  • In Windows, the Print Screen button captures an image of what appears on your entire screen and stores it on the Clipboard.

Alt + Print Screen captures an image of the active window or dialog box and stores it on the Clipboard.

You can then switch to a document in Word (or other program) and press Ctrl + V to paste the image. The image can be manipulated in documents like any other graphic.

  • My ISP keeps telling me I have mail, but when I come here, I don't find any answer. In fact, I don't even find my last reply? If you are trying to get a reply to me, try again.

  • It doesn't make a whole lot of difference, though there is some. As far as video drivers, I can only suppose that they were reinstalled when they reloaded the harddrive. It was reloaded from the Quik Restore discs from Compaq. How do I know if I have the latest ones?

  • When you are really zoomed in on text, the normal and the bold don't look very different. At page width, the difference is clearer, but I think some people may not tell the difference easily - esp. if they are the same word.
Also, a larger font may look bold next to a smaller font.

It is very difficult to say anything about this without seeing the problem...

    I had an idea!!!!
Can you do a screen grab and paste it in a Word doc and upload it here?

Bring up a word doc where you see the problem. Do a Shift+PrintScreen then paste it in a Word Doc.
attach the file here. then I can see what you see!!!

  • sounds like someone else did the hard drive work for you...is this a work pc?

  • I just found this article:

  • Hi rameam!

This is HIGHLY dependent upon your view percentage and monitor contrast settings. There's nothing wrong with your fonts.

    :)

  • Mine is set at 1024/768. That's what it was before the harddrive crashed. When I got the computer back and cranked it up, I had to adjust the size quite a bit to cover the screen (horiz and vert). It just isn't the same since I got it back. There must be some setting I am either overlooking or just don't know about. Any more suggestions?

  • Now how do I paste it in here? When I right click in this box, paste is dark.

  • I've been trying for 30 minutes to get it in here. I'm being told it is an invalid attachment. I resaved it as HTML doc. I'll try again.
Nope. I quit for now. Tell me how to get it here. Seems ridiculous to me!

  • So that means I just have to live with it? It wasn't that way before I had the harddrive replaced. I may have to take it back to Best Buy. Thanks for all your help.

  • screen resolution...in a way, it's how much information you can fit on a screen... (it's a pixel thing, actually, but I don't know how to explain that).
The higher your resolution, the more you can see because everything gets smaller (tho, you can make some things bigger manually.)
Sometimes you want a higher res so that you can see more of something (I do with documents) but some things, like icons get TOO small - you can manually adjust that.
It mainly depends on your video card (monitors nowadays can handle almost any res).
    To check/change your screen resolution:
Control Panel - Display - Settings - Screen Area. Should say something like 1024 by 768 pixels. That's the number of pixels on your screen. There's a slide bar you can adjust this up and down.
go ahead and experiment. As you change it, your windows may require resizing - no biggee.

  • Starl, either mine doesn't work or I'm missing something! I highlighted the sentence, pressed shift then prt scrn, but the only thing I can paste in there is the last thing I copied, which, in this case, is this thread address. Am I doing something wrong? I tried typing a sentence in a new Word doc, changing some of the font from 10 to 11 then copying and pasting it hear, but when I do, the font changes to the same size. I've never done this before, so don't know whether it works on my keyboard. Don't know why it wouldn't tho.

  • Go download and install the free version of SnagIt.
    http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagitdefault.asp

    :)

  • Have Word open before you do the screen capture. Newer versions of word have a habit of cleaning out the clipboard when you open word.

  • Sorry, I don't think I have ever done a Print Screen. Don't know how!

  • Print Screen is a button on your keyboard... look on the right side, usually near the top. If it's a shared key (mine is a combination Print Screen/SysRq), you'll have to press the shift while you press the print screen button.

then, just paste it in word.

  • Well, I tried it again. I pressed and held shift, then pressed print screen, opened a new Word doc, and the only thing that pasted there is this address which I just copied and pasted into the browser. Can anyone tell me what I'm not doing or doing wrong?

  • Dreamboat, I have turned the brightness and contrast up, down, around, and any other way I can think of and it doesn't make any difference. When you put #10 and 11 side by side, you would swear that 11 is bold. I even noticed today that when I zoom 10 to 120%, it even looks bold. What's going on here?

  • When I close a small window, such as explorer, it cascades down causing icons on the desktop to disappear for a second (I don't care for the cascade).
In IE, when I move the pointer over a favorite, the text disappears from the list. There is a 'tool tip' window that tells me what it is. That never happened before.
I had a lot of trouble reinstalling my IJ650 Printer, but I think I finally got it going. It may have been a clash with some other program. I closed everything except Explorer and Systray and it seems to be OK now. Haven't used it but once since.
Can't think of anything else off-hand, but will add more later as I come across it.

  • By the way, what about the screen resolution? Tell me more.

  • I was finally able to replicate what you see!!! I lowered my resolution to 1152x864 and set the view in Word to Page Width (that's the only Word setting that made the words seem bold).

hmm - I just upped my res a little, went back to word - and of course, things looked normal.
But then I set my view in word to 128% - which was page width under the previous res - and the words got bold again!
what does this mean.. I don't know.
I do see that yours is set to 100%. Have you tried the other settings?
What is your screen resolution set at?

  • I hope you get the image in your email. The lighter font is 10, the darker is 11. Neither is bold, but the 11 looks like it is.

  • Here it is - hopefully!
Nope, it says I'm attempting to upload an invalid doc. I'm trying again.
It won't take it. What am I doing wrong? It's a Word doc.
I did another print screen and pasted it into a Word doc. I'll try again.

  • aw man! BB didn't do that great of a job....
course, some stuff is settings and if your hd crashed they had no way of knowing how you had things set up.
    what's your operating system?
have you run the windows update?

  • I imagine they print ok?
you had your hard drive replaced... do you have the latest video drivers? Have you bolded a word next to one that seems bolded? how do they compare?

  • just had a thought (happens occasionally)
is your screen resolution the same as previously?
from experience - I've had fonts that look bold but then realize it's just either 1. my screen resolution has been lowered or 2. the zoom on the document has changed.
have you tried zooming in/out? Is your screen resolution lower than before? you can tell if things seem bigger than before the hd replacement.

  • hold down the shift key when pressing the print screen?

  • I have the picture in a Word doc, but it won't paste here. Why?

  • That was just something I typed. I'll find a doc and send an excerpt.

  • you can't paste it here. Paste it to a word document, save the document and upload it. To do that, reply to this message and under the text box that you enter your message, you will see the option to Attach a file.

  • Me again. After I made the last reply, your replies came up. When I got my computer back (Best Buy warranty), all windows were smaller. I had to stretch the screen out to make it fit. All windows - explorer, hearts, free cell, etc. are all smaller. I was going to post another thread to see if someone knew what caused that, and if there is a setting I can change to make them like they were before.

  • Windows Me. I have run some updates, but not all. The last time (before the HD crashed) I d/l those updates, it messed up my computer. However, that may have had something to do with the HD. I will eventually get them. It probably won't make any difference with present problems, because the problems the updates caused before are not the same as what seems to be out of whack now. I hope I don't have to take it back to BB, I use it every day and am 'lost' without it. Thanks for your help.
