Democratic People's Republic of Korea

  • HiYa I understand Charles Robert Jenkins will be going to Indonesia. Besides Charles Robert Jenkins , I understand from news reports that there are at least 4 other US defectors now living in North Korea. Any idea who they are? Thanks Mongolia

  • tutuzdad Thank you for your prompt answer to what I know is a rather obscure subject. My thanks also to the comments from Hailstorm regarding the reunion of Jenkins and his wife in Indonesia. Mongolia

  • Dear mongolia-ga; Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question. The Pentagon first acknowledged US defectors living in North Korea in a report in the Army Time on September 13, 1982. Their names however were not published until much later. According to the Pentagon information dated January 1996, the names of the US soldiers who deserted the US military and defected to North Korea in the 1960?s were: Pvt. Larry Allen Abshier, of Urbana, Ill. - left his unit in May 1962 at age 19. Cpl. Jerry Wayne Parrish (inaccurately reported as ?Parris?), of Morganfield, Ky. - left his unit in December 1963 at age 19. Pvt. James Joseph Dresnok, of Norfolk, Va. - left his unit in August 1962 at age 21. PFC Dresnok is married to a North Korean and has a daughter. Sgt. Charles Robert Jenkins, of Rich Square, N.C., married to Hitomi Soga in 1980, a Japanese woman kidnapped by the North Koreans in August of 1978 with whom he now has two daughters - left his unit (1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division) in January 1965 at age 25. Some reports indicate that Jenkins has stated that he wishes to leave North Korea; others say he has no intention of doing so. According to a statement by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi published by the Associated Press, "Mr. Jenkins has agreed to meet his family in Indonesia" on July 26 of this year. FREE NORTH KOREA http://www.freenorthkorea.net/archives/freenorthkorea/001391.html This is a fairly recent photo of Jenkins together with his two daughters and one of his wife Soga: BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38465000/jpg/_38465317_jenkins_daughers300afp.jpg BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38465000/jpg/_38465319_soga150ap.jpg The American deserters, three or four of which are still believed to be alive, are said to be living in the "foreigner's apartments", Chukehon-dong, Mangyongdae-kuyok, on the west-side of Pyongyang. Some of the defectors reportedly appeared in the North Korean movie, ?Unsung Heroes? (aka ?"Nameless Heroes"), a black-and-white movie filmed over several years in the early 1980s, which portrays North Korea's counterintelligence efforts. On Feb. 2, 1989, a N Korean defector reported that as many as 11 Americans defectors were serving in the capacity of English teachers or translators in North Korea but this was apparently never confirmed. We do know however that two other soldiers have since been identified as defectors, having deserted well after the hostilities in Korea ended. They were identified as Pvt. Joseph White (defected August 1982) of the 2nd Infantry Division and Ryan (sometimes reported as ?Roy?) Sup Chung (defected June 1979), a member of a military unit based in Germany. Both are now believed to be deceased. Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy for you in the event that you need to search for more information.
