A Fish In Water Question?

  • When looking at fish in water they appear closer and deeper than they actually are. Can anyone explain exactly why this is the case? Your help is appreciated.

  • if you look from above the fish in in water then:
if the depth of the fish from water surface is d and the refractive index of water with respect to air is 4/3 then the depth at which fish will appear to you = d/(4/3) = 3d/4 which is closer.
and you shall appear to fish at a distance h + d(4/3) = h + 4d/3 where h is height of your head from water surface.
