720p @ 50Hz

  • Is there any way to set the resolution to 720p @ 50Hz rather than the standard 720p @ 60Hz.

Currently, when I play NTSC material, everything looks fine. When I play PAL material (25Hz) I get lots of juddering. If I use Enigma to switch the video mode back to PAL, I can play 576i @ 50HZ with no juddering.

So, can I get a BIOS or tweak a setting which will set the output resolution to 720p but the refresh rate to 50Hz?

I have a PAL 1.1 Xbox running the latest version of XMBC. I've hard modded it with a Xenium and used Enigma to set the video output to NTSC. In the Xbox dash, I've enabled 720p mode. Xbmc is set to use 720p.

I've done a search of this forum, but I couldn't find anything...

  • If running in NTSC mode, there is a setting within video settings, for framerate conversion, with 2 options - "None" and "Play PAL videos at NTSC framerates" - I was suggesting he try this...

Now that's interesting - I'll try that later today and report back.

    Tr

  • As far as I know no.
As you're already aware, the xbox can only do 720p when in NTSC mode
This *could be* a bios limitation, but noone has broken this limitation when bios development was still active (by other parties), and these days *all* bios development has stalled, thus I don't think this issue will ever be resolved.

  • it is actually a kernel limitation i think. that stuff is stored in a table in the kernel, so potentially one could patch that to allow 720p 50hz. that said, i'm not sure what the video encoder chip would say.

  • PAL does not support 480p/720p/1080i, PAL only supports 576i (720x576 interlaced)

  • I think it is a hardware limitation of the video output chip, but you have to read the specifications of those chips to be sure.

  • Gamester17, I'm aware (and I'm sure tryfen is too) that PAL boxes don't support 480p/720p/1080i, but tryfen did say in his first post that he has "used Enigma to set the video output to NTSC" (as have I).

If running in NTSC mode, there is a setting within video settings, for framerate conversion, with 2 options - "None" and "Play PAL videos at NTSC framerates" - I was suggesting he try this...

  • tryfen, have you tried setting PAL videos to play at NTSC framerates in the video settings?
