Amy Winehouse: Edge of Madness
Published by: mike 2008-08-21

Recently People magazine reported Winehouse was released from the hospital with a diagnosis of scarring of the lungs, which is an early stage of the lung disease emphysema. This health issue is due to smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes. Doctors have advised Winehouse to stop smoking to save her lungs, but the singer ignored this advice following her release from the hospital, in which she was photographed smoking a cigarette.

Before her health became the focus of headlines in celebrity magazines like People, In Touch and Us Weekly, it was Winehouse’s chaotic personal life with her equally troubled husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

Winehouse started her professional singing career at the tender age of 16 when she cut a demo. At 20 she released her debut album entitled “Frank.” The album became a charting hit in England and garnered her several award nominations. In 2006 Winehouse released the album “Back to Black,” which largely in part to the single “Rehab” was an instant success in the U.K. and in the U.S when it was released in 2007.

Music magazines like Rolling Stone, Spin magazine and Billboard magazine generally reported positive reviews of Winehouse’s “Back to Black” album. Rolling Stone magazine called her a “nervy, witty songstress whom indie rockers, pop fans and hip-hoppers can dig.”

Professional and personal successes have since eluded Winehouse due largely in part to her very public battle with illegal drugs. The singer has fumbled through many live performances and been followed relentlessly by celebrity magazines for a marijuana bust and a series of struggles and fights with her husband. In 2007 People magazine ran disturbing pictures of a battered and bloodied Winehouse and husband emerging from her apartment.

Due to her legal troubles Winehouse was unable to acquire a traveling visa to perform her hit “Rehab” at the February 2008 Grammy Awards. Instead of appearing in person, Winehouse performed via satellite from London. The ceremony proved a fruitful night for Winehouse. She was awarded five trophies including Best New Artist and Record of the Year for “Rehab.” After the awards show aired Winehouse’s album resurfaced on the Billboard Magazine charts to Number 3.

In May 2008, Rolling Stone magazine reported Winehouse was working on a new album with fellow troubled U.K. songwriter Pete Doherty while a judge ordered husband Fielder-Civil to remain in jail until Christmas. Fielder-Civil has served about nine months of his sentence for pleading guilty to charges of assault and perverting the course of justice.
